Saving money!

I want to thank him because we’re trying to cut down our payroll and as far as I’m concerned I’m very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll. There’s no real reason for them to go back. I greatly appreciate the fact that we’ve been able to cut our payroll of the United States. We’re going to save a lot of money.

– President Donald J. Trump, August 10, 2017, in response to Vladimir Putin punishing the U.S. by expelling hundreds of U.S. diplomats and aid workers.

Press driven diplomacy

Peña Nieto: My position has been and will continue to be very firm saying that Mexico cannot pay for that wall.

Trump: But you cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances.

From an economic issue, it is the least important thing we were talking about, but psychologically, it means something so let us just say “we will work it out.”

– President Donald J. Trump, January, 2017, admitting that his promise of a wall that Mexico will pay for was just a press-driven political stunt

I hate it!

I will just have to say that unfortunately I will have to live with what was said by Obama. I will say I hate it. Look, I spoke to Putin, Merkel, Abe of Japan, to France today, and this was my most unpleasant call because I will be honest with you.

I have had it. I have been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day. Putin was a pleasant call. This is ridiculous.

World’s greatest person

Malcom, why is this so important? I do not understand. This is going to kill me. I am the world’s greatest person that does not want to let people into the country. And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people and I agree I can vet them, but that puts me in a bad position. It makes me look so bad and I have only been here a week.

– President Donald J. Trump, January, 2017, to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, after Turnbull explained to him multiple times that he’s not agreeing to take 2,000 Syrian refugees, but to vet them and admit or deny them on a case-by-case basis

Tough hombres, part deux

You have some pretty tough hombres in Mexico that you may need help with, and we are willing to help you with that big-league. But they have to be knocked out and you have not done a good job of knocking them out.

Or Whatever

But President Xi, from the time I took office, he has not, they have not been currency manipulators. Because there’s a certain respect because he knew I would do something or whatever. But more importantly than him not being a currency manipulator the bigger picture, bigger than even currency manipulation, if he’s helping us with North Korea, with nuclear and all of the things that go along with it, who would call, what am I going to do, say, “By the way, would you help us with North Korea? And also, you’re a currency manipulator.” It doesn’t work that way.
